Origin of teak
Known for its exceptional durability and aesthetics, teak wood has a rich history, dating back to prehistoric times.
Already in ancient civilisations, people recognised its usefulness, making it one of the most valuable raw materials used in construction and crafts.
History and use of teak
For millennia, teak was mainly used in the manufacture of ships and joinery components that required exceptional resistance to moisture. Its natural properties made it the ideal material for the construction of boats that had to face harsh weather conditions. This is because teak is extremely resistant to a wide range of adverse environmental factors, such as water, mould and various pathogens.
One of teak's most important strengths is its durability. On average, teak products have a lifespan calculated at around 200 years, but archaeologists have discovered utilitarian objects made from this wood that were made over 1,000 years ago. Such discoveries confirm that teak is not only a beautiful material, but also extremely durable.
The natural environment and characteristics of teak
Teak trees (Tectona grandis) naturally occur in South Asia, in countries such as Burma, India, Laos and Thailand, as well as in Indochina. They inhabit monsoon forests, where there are specific climatic conditions that favour their growth. This species is characterised by rapid growth, and its wood has a cohesive structure and a distinct pattern of annual growth. The grain of teak wood informs the cyclical nature of the dry and wet seasons, giving it a unique appearance.
Fresh teak impresses with its beautiful golden-honey colour, which takes on a deeper hue as it ages. Distinctive, almost black streaks also stand out on it, which add to its character. In addition, this wood emits a pleasant aroma, which makes it a popular choice not only for construction, but also for furniture and interior decoration.
Teak wood is not only a material of extraordinary durability and aesthetics, but also a testament to human ingenuity and the ability to utilise natural resources. Its history dates back thousands of years and its unique properties make it highly valued all over the world. Thanks to its properties, teak is still used in a variety of applications, and its beauty and durability ensure that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.
